The Pedestrian’s Venice
The city of Venice looks very different from the point of view of a pedestrian than from the point of view of a sailor. Islands and blocks rarely trace each other; canals and pathways are two independent networks. In this publication we investigate the spatial structure of pedestrians’ Venice: we distinguish and taxonomize various types of blocks and provide a series of large scale maps that visualize the contrast between islands and blocks. The publication contains two sets of maps—Venice of today (2017) and Venice of 1729 based on the map of Lodovico Ughi.
